Submarines System Integration
Synoptix were contracted to provide a prime contractor for Systems Engineering support with the customer’s complex naval platform programme. This entailed developing system engineering strategies and best practice, and evolved to including the delivery of design, modelling and integration support according to the developed strategies.
Our approach
Synoptix deployed and embedded a dedicated and proven systems engineering team, utilising a Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) approach to capture the design and integration of a number of complex systems for the platform.
We produced and deployed a modelling strategy. Then modelling activities began by establishing a baseline of current modelling activities, and interacting with a range of stakeholders – both technical and non-technical – along with assessment of the existing architectural framework and established processes.
Through this assessment, a prototype model was produced to demonstrate the value and added capability that MBSE could provide over traditional, document-centric systems. The project continued with the development of a fully integrated systems model eventually becoming the single source of truth.
Benefits
The use of system modelling activities are fundamental in capturing the complex interactions and behaviours between subsystems, systems and the whole enterprise.
By developing this MBSE strategy, we ensured that future engineering work undertaken by the customer would be backed up by a robust methodology and process that adhered to systems engineering best practice, and ensured the 'left shift' paradigm.
