Integration of Communications System

The customer had developed a communication system that was to be fitted to national police helicopters to replace the current in-service system. As the system was already developed prior to the police requirement, our customer needed to prove to the end user that the system met their functional requirements.

Our approach

Synoptix was brought in to develop the functional hierarchy model and to produce the lower level system requirements within DOORS Next Generation.

Following on from this, the task was to link the requirements from the system level to the end-user requirements where possible, and then carry out a gap analysis between the developed system and the police framework requirements. This analysis was to show where there were limitations in assessing mitigation justifications.

Initially, a functional hierarchy was developed, which provided a map of how the requirements would be broken down and feed into each other. This was the basis of the VVRM and was agreed with our customer as the overall structure to be developed within the DOORS database. Once agreed, Synoptix then built the system level requirement structure within DOORS and assessed all linkages to the end user functional requirements, which in turn enabled the gap analysis.

Customer meetings were held where Synoptix were able to bring the customer on the development journey and highlight any key, early-stage issues to save later re-work time and cost.

Benefits

Not only did Synoptix develop and agree the process strategy to achieve full coverage, but during the work we were able to highlight where the system requirements had been incorrectly linked at an early stage. We could then rectify this error, saving both time and money in re-work – as well as making sure our customer was delivering the correct solution to the customer with the correct evidence.
